The final prosthetic restoration is completed at a subsequent stage, so treatment may require another trip to Poland. Most patients can be considered for dental implant treatment. Permanent absolute contraindications are relatively rare. In many cases, implant placement may still be possible once an underlying medical or dental condition has been appropriately treated or stabilised.

When dental implant treatment may need to be postponed or may not be recommended

Implant placement may need to be postponed in patients with an unstable or serious systemic medical condition, such as a recent heart attack or stroke, unstable angina, decompensated heart failure, severe cardiac arrhythmias or uncontrolled hypertension. Treatment can be reconsidered once the patient’s medical condition has been stabilised and, where necessary, following consultation with the treating physician.

Implant treatment may also be contraindicated or require specialist assessment in patients undergoing certain types of cancer treatment, particularly high-dose antiresorptive or antiangiogenic therapy, as well as in patients with active medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), osteoradionecrosis or malignant disease affecting the planned implant site.

Patients undergoing chemotherapy, or those with significant immunosuppression, neutropenia or thrombocytopenia, may need to postpone implant surgery until their medical condition and blood parameters allow the procedure to be performed safely.

Elective implant treatment is generally postponed during pregnancy.

Dental implant treatment also requires that the patient is able to give informed consent to the procedure and to maintain adequate oral hygiene afterwards, if necessary with the support of a caregiver. Where this is not possible, implant treatment cannot be safely recommended.

Medical conditions and medications

Many common medical conditions do not automatically exclude dental implant treatment. Well-controlled diabetes, osteoporosis, stable cardiovascular disease and treatment with anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication may still allow implant placement, but require individual assessment and appropriate treatment planning.

Poorly controlled diabetes may increase the risk of complications and impaired healing, so implant surgery may need to be postponed until adequate metabolic control has been achieved.

Patients who have previously received radiotherapy to the head and neck require particularly careful assessment. The location and radiation dose must be considered before implant treatment can be recommended.

If you are taking bisphosphonates, denosumab, anticoagulants, antiplatelet medication, long-term corticosteroids or other medications that may affect healing, bone metabolism or bleeding, please inform your dentist before treatment. Do not discontinue prescribed medication without consulting the doctor responsible for your treatment.

Smoking and dental implants

Smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes and other nicotine products, is an important risk factor in dental implant treatment. It may adversely affect healing and increase the risk of complications and implant failure.

Smoking does not necessarily make implant treatment impossible, but the associated risks should be assessed individually and discussed with your dentist.

Oral health and local conditions

Healthy gums and good oral hygiene are essential for successful implant treatment. Active periodontal disease, gingivitis, untreated dental infections and poor plaque control should therefore be treated before implant placement.

The dentist will also assess whether there is sufficient bone volume and quality, adequate space for the planned restoration and favourable anatomical conditions for safe and predictable implant placement.

If there is insufficient bone, additional procedures such as bone augmentation or sinus lift surgery may make implant treatment possible.

Other factors, including severe bruxism, unfavourable occlusion, severe dry mouth or difficulty maintaining adequate oral hygiene, may affect treatment planning and the long-term prognosis of dental implants.

Individual assessment before implant treatment

Implant placement in patients whose jaw growth has not yet been completed is generally postponed until skeletal development is finished, since an implant cannot move with the growing jaw the way natural teeth can. Exceptions may be considered for significant congenital conditions, where treatment is planned by a multidisciplinary team.

Age alone is not a contraindication to dental implants. Similarly, well-controlled diabetes, osteoporosis, anticoagulant treatment, smoking or a history of successfully treated periodontal disease do not automatically exclude implant treatment.

The decision is always based on an individual assessment of your general health, oral health, medications, bone conditions and the planned prosthetic restoration.

Consultations are generally carried out at the clinic. However, for patients living abroad, a remote consultation may be possible based on appropriate diagnostic records — primarily a CBCT scan and a recent panoramic X-ray. The patient should also take a photo with the lips relaxed, a photo smiling with the teeth together, a natural smile, and close-up photos of the upper and lower teeth.
